The zkillboard data is useless for statistical purposes due to kill inflation. The problem is that everyone who was present on the kill get full kill value, despite he did part of the kill. If 9 equal ships smartbomb each other to death, everyone will get 90% ISK ratio. This isn't just a theoretical problem, the actual dataset is highly inflated and has tiny correlation with de-inflated data:
To battle this, I distribute the kills among the killers. If a pilot, corp or alliance did 1% damage of a 100B titan, they get 1B damage in the statistics, not 100B. Below you can see the top damage alliances of 2015, compared to their 2014 performance. The 2014 data was complete and took months to get, so in 2015 just selected alliances were queried. This means that alliances can be missing, therefore true ranks can be lower than indicated here. If you think a relevant alliance is missing, please comment and I add it. Of course nothing matches the "zero to hero" of Project.Mayhem, but Snuff, Lowsechnaya, MoA, Bastion, OOS, SMA, LAWN and DRF increased their kills by more than a half. On the other hand there were big losers, the biggest being BL and Nulli, both disbanding and several alliances losing 1/3-1/2 of their kills and RAZOR losing 2/3.
In 2015, 1218 millionnullsec rats died. if you compare it with the total rats in the sov of the top 20 killers, you'll see that Sov-holding makes no one good in PvP.
