Weekend minipost: the end of ratting carriers

The upcoming capital rebalance splits carriers into a fighter and a repper carrier. Repper carriers can't do damage, so can't rat. Fighter-carriers can't remote rep, so can't jump to a tackled one and save it. Vary bad news for those living in Deklein. Someone already got the memo:

Two of them didn't have to wait till spring to get rid of their carriers.

PS: is that guy selling accounts too, not just ships? Time to report him!

Nah, not the end of ratting carriers. They will be just as effective for ratting as they were before. Likely not even the end of stupid ratters using carriers either.

Just means switching from Drones to Light Fighters Squadrons, nothing really different.

maybe the new dreadnought weapons will bring us ratting dreads instead of carriers.

The point of carrier ratting isn't the carrier DPS (pirate and T2 battleships do similar with better tracking for less price). It's the ability to survive long enough for other ratters to jump to the tackled carrier for instant slowcat fleet. With slowcat nerf, if one is tackled, it's dead.

Until the next dominant doctrine comes along to replace it...which will be theory crafted before the changes even land and implemented very soon after.

If one thing is constant in eve, it's that large alliances will figure out a way to min-max money making activities to do them in relative safety, leveraging their enormous size to their advantage.

Mechanics changes will put bumps in the road for them, but ultimately they will be worked around.

One dreadful change here is the nerf to refitting in combat.. carrier refitting was a great equalizer. Highly skilled triage pilots could use real human skill as a force multiplier (see rooks and kings, carrier refitting with a small handful of archons, able to engage fleets which vastly outnumbered them due to superior human skill).... with this gone, the advantage in fleet fights swings back to those with the numbers.... which is a bad thing for the enemies of goons.

No, the end of ratting carriers came when CCP Larakin said that the new fighter squadrons will not auto-aggress. You can still rat in a carrier, but you won't be able to AFK rat, which is the standard way to use a ratting carrier as far as I can tell.

Now the actual devblog is out, you can probably draw firmer conclusions.

"One dreadful change here is the nerf to refitting in combat" The change is not dreadful so much as inconvenient to people who relied on it. It also favored +1 since the opposition could easily employ the same technique.

Opposition could implement the technique, clearly, but historically have not been terribly good at it. Even within fleets I'd flown in with an "elite" core of archon pilots, only a small percentage of those were actually good enough at combat refitting to turn the tide of a battle.

It favours skills over "assign drones, watch for rep spam"

There are numerous instances of vastly outnumbered carrier triage groups beating bigger blobs due to superior player skill. It's the ability to apply player skill that is being nerfed here... it heavily favours those who couldn't overcome a good refitting carrier group.

You know for a fact characters can be sold for isk and people often say account when they mean the character.
